Fennec Fox (Vulpes zerda)

Range and Habitat: The fennec occurs in the deserts of northern Africa, mostly in the Sahara desert, in the countries of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, south to the Sudan to approximately 17° N.

Physical Appearance

The fennec fox is the smallest canid in the world. They are a fawn to golden in color. Their muzzle is very pointed and small. They have the largest ears relative to body size of the canids; their ears are much larger than their head. They can be up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length. Such large ears make it possible to dissipate heat, because the fennec lives in the hot deserts of North Africa. The fennec has very small teeth relative to their body size, especially the canines, since they do not hunt large prey. Their feet are covered in fur to prevent the hot sand from burning their pads. Their anal glands are covered in dark bristly hairs.

Diet: The fennec feeds upon rodents, rabbits, gerbils, lizards, roots, birds, insects, eggs, and date fruit.

Reproduction and Social Behavior

The Фотоy are mostly nocturnal, and have been observed in groups of up to 10 individuals. Territories are marked with urine. Fennecs can growl, bark, and even "purr" as means of communication. The fennec is a social animal, with a group living in a permanent den in the ground. They often fight over the limited food supply.

The fennec fox is unlike many other canids in that the female can produce two litters a year. Mating season is between January and February. The female is in heat for only two days in this time. During the 4-6 weeks of the mating season, the males are extremely aggressive and actively mark their territory with urine. After a gestation period of 50-52 days, the female gives birth to 2-5 offspring in a permanent den. The male helps bring food but does not enter the den because the female is aggressive and protective when suckling cubs. The cubs first start wandering out of the den at four weeks, and completely leave the den at three months. The young may choose to stay with their parents for up to a year.

Threats

They are trapped for their fur and sold as pets.

Taxonomic Note

The word fennec comes from the Arabic word "fanak", which means fox. The species name, zerda, comes from the Greek "xeros", which means dry, describing their habitat.

The fennec fox was formerly placed in the genus Fennecus, but has since been reclassified in the genus Vulpes. http://www.lioncrusher.com/animal.asp?animal=17
