Range and Habitat

The ring tailed cat lives in the arid rocky regions and woodland areas of south-western United States, in the states of: Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Physical Appearance

Females are slightly smaller than males. Ring tailed cats are generally a greyish brown color, with between 14 - 16 alternating bands of black and fawn on their tail. They have white markings above and below each eye and on their muzzle, with black markings coming from the inside corner of each eyeleading down the side of the muzzle. Their ears are dark grey with a lighter tip. They have five toes on each foot, with semi-retractable claws. Their hind feet can rotate 180°, allowing them to descend a trФотоee head-first.

They can be distingushed from the similar cacomistle (Bassariscus sumichrasti) because the ring tailed cat has rounded ears (B. sumichrasti has pointed ears), hairy soles of the feet (B. sumichrasti's are naked), semi-retractable claws (B. sumichrasti's are non-retractile), slightly shorter tail, and higher ridges on their molars.

Diet

The ring tailed cat is omnivorous, and will feed on animal matter like spiders, scorpions, centipedes, grasshoppers, crickets, rats, mice, squirrels, rabbits, small birds, snakes, lizards, frogs, and toads, and fruits like persimmons, hackberries, juniper, and mistletoe.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Mating season is in April. After a gestation period of 45-50 days, the female gives birth to 2-4 cubs in a den. The male helps out by providing food for the female while she is pregnant. The cubs' eyes open between 31-34 days. They start hunting independently at four months.

Social Behavior

The ring tailed cat is mostly nocturnal, and will sleep during the day in a den. When it wakes in the dusk it will groom itself before it goes off to forage for food. They prefer to live in rocky, broken areas near water. Their home range is at most 3.2 sq km. Males have larger home ranges, and same-sex ranges do not overlap. They scent-mark regularly with urine deposits at specific areas.

Threats. The great horned owl and bobcat prey on the ring tailed cat. It is not hunted by man.
